The second-floor gallery presents a curated dialogue between British landscapes and light abstraction through the works of two distinct artists. Leading British landscape painter Richard Whadcock is renowned for his atmospheric interpretations and captures the dynamism of the South Downs and East Sussex coast, ranging from tranquil stillness to tempestuousness. In contrast to the bucolic hopefulness of “Waking Day”, “Concealing Dawn” depicts a foggy urban scene – likely a depiction of London – reminiscent of J.M.W Turner’s richly atmospheric and expressive work.
