In The Drawing Room – once the quiet heart of the Old War Office – a new afternoon tea unfolds, drawn from one of the most daring deceptions of the Second World War. Operation Mincemeat fooled an enemy and helped turn the course of history. Now its story is told the only way a great secret should be: slowly, and over tea.
Each cake draws on the people, places and flavours of 1943 – Sicily, Spain, Scotland – so that an extraordinary chapter of British ingenuity arrives, quite literally, by the slice.
The tea itself is the tale, told in five cakes
It opens as tradition asks – tartlets, savouries, five kinds of finger sandwich – before the story is served: five cakes, each drawn from a chapter of the 1943 deception, told through seasonal British ingredients and quiet invention.
A briefcase concealing its secrets
The signature centrepiece – a layered cake in the shape of a leather case, standing for the documents that carried the deception. Inside, sweet surprises; in the crumb, coffee, barley malt and roasted grains, the staples of 1943.
A propeller and a fabricated identity
Shaped as an aircraft's propeller, this cake honours Major William Martin – the officer who never existed, lost in a crash that never happened. Basil, lemon and olive oil nod to Sicily, the true target the ruse concealed.
A love letter to a fiancée who never was
A delicate charlotte for "Pam", the fiancée invented to give Major Martin a believable life. Scottish shortbread and raspberry trace the story north – to Holy Loch, where the submarine slipped away, and where Pam was said to belong.
THE GRUFFALO AFTERNOON TEA
For younger guests who like their teatime with an adventurous twist – a Gruffalo-themed afternoon tea awaits.
For those aged 12 and under, the whimsical new Gruffalo menu found exclusively at The Drawing Room journeys through the deep dark wood with imaginative creations and playful treats inspired by familiar favourites and new characters in Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s newest Gruffalo story, Gruffalo Granny.
Little explorers follow a trail of seasonal sandwiches and pastries, while the grown-ups decode the secrets of Operation Mincemeat, sharing tea, storytelling, and time together in one of the London’s grandest settings. Available until January 2027.
The drawing room
Tea is served in the room the War Office kept for its quietest conversations – mahogany sash windows opening onto the passing Household Cavalry, a carved stone fireplace, a grand piano through the afternoon. This is where careful words once shaped a war. The ritual The Drawing Room now keeps is gentler: scones and clotted cream, a live pianist from four o’clock, and history close enough to touch.
